Through the Lens of the Church

The Church must be one with Jesus. In order to grow and thrive, the Church needs to be obedient, trusting, faithful and united. When we read the Gospels, we can see the first Christians learning these important lessons.

Transfiguration (August 6)

The Church is formed around Jesus glorified. (Mt 17:1-9) The Church is not located in any one place because it is not a building but a living unity of all the faithful. Looking at Jesus and listening to him, we need to rise and go wherever Jesus wants us to go.

19th Sunday after Pentecost (August 13)

Today we see what the Church looks like if it fails to look at Jesus and listen to him. (Mt 14:22-33) Through all storms and trials, Jesus is always coming to our aid. But we need to keep our eyes on him and obey him. If we do not remember the commands of Jesus, the Church begins to sink.

20th Sunday after Pentecost (August 20)

In today’s Gospel, the disciples are gathered around Jesus and they learn an important lesson. The Church will be open to all people if they have faith. Jesus desires that each one of us express a faith in him as great as the faith of the Canaanite woman. (Mt 15:21-28)

21st Sunday after Pentecost (August 27)

The Church needs to agree about who Jesus is and express that faith in union with Peter. (Mt 16:13-20 When we understand that Jesus is the Son of the Living God, we will want to do what he wants and stay united to the Church that he has founded.
