All Souls’ Day

This is a special day to remember all those who have departed from this life. They are our friends and we can help them finish their journey.

The second Beatitude says, “Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted.” All those who mourn are promised comfort along the way of life. Then, when they reach the end of their journey, they will live with the Comforter forever.

In the Gospel about the Sheep and Goats (which may be chosen for today’s Gospel), it is those who mourn over the sorrows of others and are moved to comfort them who will hear the most comforting words, “Come, you blessed of my Father and inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.”

During the month of November, visit a cemetery and pray for the souls of those you know and of those you don’t know. Ask them what they wish they would have done during their life and begin to carry out the works of mercy in your own life.

Then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:17-18
