Sunday Gospels
Through the Lens of the Desires of Jesus
Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time (September 1)
The Pharisees were very careful about following external practices. They thought that by seeing the external actions of a person, they could know if he was good. But the eyes of Jesus see into the depth of our hearts. His desire is that we have clean hearts from which flow honesty, fidelity, praise, humility, generosity, kindness, truth, modesty and joy. Our deeds must spring from our love of God and neighbor or they have no value.
Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time (September 8)
When God created us, he gave us many gifts. Two of them were hearing and speech. The desire of Jesus is that we could use our ears to hear his words and we would use our tongues to praise him. But very often our ears are closed to the truth and our tongues are unable to praise. Jesus wants each one of us to be open so that we hear his voice and use ours to praise him.
Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time (September 15)
“But who do you say that I am?” (Mk 8:27-35)
Today Jesus asks you a question, “Who do you say I am?” Each person wants to be known by others. Jesus also desires that we know who he is. He wants to be loved and in order to love someone we have to know him. It is the Father who can reveal to us who Jesus is. Let us ask the Father to show us his Son.
Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time (September 22)
The apostles did not understand the words of Jesus because they did not understand his Heart. They all wanted to be the most important. But the desire in the Heart of Jesus is to serve even to the point of dying for sinners. He wants us to be like him and share his desire to serve, to walk the way of love and humility.
Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (September 29)
In today’s Gospel, John wants to keep someone from doing good. Jesus teaches him to see things differently. Jesus desires that we all be united in doing good even the smallest deeds of every day. And he desires that we avoid sin which hurts others and drives people apart.
