Sunday Gospels
Through the Lens of Easter

Easter Sunday (April 20)
The Lord is Risen! Alleluia! “Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.” (Jn 20:1-9) What did he see? He saw that death had been conquered. Jesus had been true to his promises and now we can all live happily ever after. The story never has an end because we will have Eternal Life with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit forever. Amen.
Divine Mercy Sunday (April 27)

Belief is essential for every disciple. Even when Jesus walked on the Earth, the disciples had to believe his words which were often difficult for them to accept. And when he had ascended into Heaven, they had to continue believing and trusting. Since we have not seen him, can we continue to believe and trust in the goodness of the Lord? If we look at him with the eyes of our heart, we will receive his blessing. (Jn 20:19-31)

3rd Sunday of Easter (May 4)
Even though we haven’t seen Jesus with our physical eyes, we are part of a long chain of witnesses who have been instructed in the teachings of the Lord and who have experienced his goodness. As disciples, we are called to draw others into this bond of love and peace by our words and by the beauty of our lives. (Lk 24:35-48)
4th Sunday of Easter (May 11)

How will the world know that we are disciples? By seeing us united in love under the care of the one Shepherd. Jesus prayed that we all would be one so that the world might know that he is the Savior. If we are separated, we do not fulfill the desire of the Lord and we are likely to lose our way. Unity takes good will, firm desire, and the determined work of us all. (Jn 10:11-18)
5th Sunday of Easter (May 18)

A disciple bears fruit. But as we saw last week, we can not bear fruit acceptable to the Lord if we are not united to him and to each other. When a person is cut off from the living Vine, the end is spiritual death. But in this time of Mercy, let us pray that if we have sinned against unity, the kindness of the Lord will permit us to rise from our death to new life in him. (Jn 15:1-8)
Sixth Sunday of Easter (May 25)

“Remain in my love.” (Jn 15:9-17)
What does every friendship need? Love. Your friendship with Jesus is a true friendship. That means the more you love him and love those that he loves, the deeper your friendship becomes. You can live with Jesus at all times by living in love at all times.
The Ascension (May 29 or June 1)

“While the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.” (Mk 16:15-20)
How are you going to recognize Jesus in your life now that he has ascended into Heaven? Keep your eyes open for signs. Friends always give each other signs of their love: kind deeds, unexpected presents, encouragement. The signs of Love are all around you. But do you notice them?
Pentecost Sunday (June 8)

“Peace be with you… Receive the Holy Spirit.” (Jn 20:19-23)
“The Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me.” (Jn 15:26-27; 16:12-15)
Today on Pentecost there is another way of living with Jesus always: Receive the Holy Spirit. When you allow the Holy Spirit to live in you, then you can live in peace. Peace is a way to live deeply connected to Jesus. Another way the Holy Spirit connects you to himself and to Jesus is by giving you a share in his witness. If you watch for his inspiration, you will live in union with Jesus.
