Day Two

Let’s learn to know the Holy Spirit better during these nine days before Pentecost. Here is the second step.

Have you ever played follow the leader? If the leader is not your friend, you might be led into danger. But if your leader is truly wise and good, you won’t need to fear even if the way seems dangerous.

After Jesus had been baptized, the Holy Spirit led him into the desert where Jesus defeated the temptations of the devil. Later, Jesus told us that he would give us the Holy Spirit to be our guide, too. Even when the way seems difficult, we can trust the Holy Spirit to lead us.

Often the guidance of the Holy Spirit remains unknown and unseen by us. There can be many reasons for this. Sometimes we only want to follow our own will. At other times, we are closed to the truth due to fear or hardened hearts. Maybe we are listening to other guides who are leading us astray.

During this time of waiting for a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit, decide to follow his guidance. Tell him that you want to listen to his voice. Beg him to stay with you and guide you always.

The second day of a novena to the Holy Spirit:

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Let your good spirit guide me in ways that are level and smooth. (Psalm 143:10)

Come Holy Spirit and guide me safely through all the dangers of life. Amen.
