What’s In My Backyard?

Meet the Neighbors: A Golden Northern Bumblebee

For the introduction to this series, see here.

What’s in my backyard? I found this bumblebee enjoying one of our pea flowers. Bumblebees are attracted to pea and tomato flowers, among others. If you have a vegetable garden, try looking for these large gentle bees on the tomato flowers. Bumblebees are very important to tomato plants since the bees vibrate the flowers at just the right frequency to release pollen! If there were no bumblebees, there would still be tomatoes but there would be many fewer per plant. Though bumblebees are not aggressive, they can sting, so you should not pet them.
