What’s In My Backyard?

Meet the Neighbors: Variegated Meadowhawk Dragonfly

For the introduction to this series, see here.

Meet the Variegated Meadowhawk. This species of dragonfly is common in the western half of the country and rarer in the east. Meadowhawks can be found near water or chasing insects over gardens and fields. If you live in the eastern half of the country, you may not see this species but there are other species of meadowhawk that live in the east. Variegated Meadowhawks migrate like birds! In winter, they fly to Honduras and Belize. If you see this species in spring, it is likely that they have just come back from South America!
