Meet the Neighbors: Elegant Grass-carrying Wasp

For the introduction to this series, see here.

This wasp is a member of the grass-carrying wasp group (genus Isodontia). These interesting wasps live up to their name. You will often see them flying along carrying a blade of grass longer than themselves. What are they doing with the grass? The wasps are carrying the grass to holes in wood or hollow plant stems to build a nest for their eggs. They lay eggs in the tube and then use the grass to stuff into the holes sealing it off from potential predators. If you find a hole with a tuft of grass sticking out, it is probably the work of the Elegant Grass-carrying Wasp or one of its relatives.
