Farmers and gardeners like things that eat aphids. Sometimes they even buy packages of ladybugs or aphid-eating wasps to help control aphids. Many people do not realize that there are many other insects that eat aphids. The white-bowed Smoothwing is one of these insects. These little flies lay eggs on plants covered with aphids. The eggs hatch into small caterpillar-like grubs that eat aphids at an amazing rate. They are like little aphid vacumes. A single grub may eat over 500 aphids in its lifetime!
